{Inspire} – Winter ONEderland Birthday Party

Despite a severe wind storm days before the party, and living in the middle of sunny California, Gwynn of Gwynn Wasson Designs managed to create an over the top magical winter ONEderland for her son Beckett’s first birthday. As guests arrived they were ushered in by a “committee” of penguins holding polka dot balloons and greeted by huge welcome sign. Once inside there were plenty of sweet treats to keep guests smiling and a “warming station” with hot chocolate and coffee to keep them toasty while playing in the snow.

Yes, I said snow…in California. This must have been the biggest treat for the unsuspecting guests. Gwynn (with the help of her husband) created a giant “snow box” filled with real shaved ice/fake snow that guests could play in. For an added touch of whimsy, penguin beach balls were added to the snow box. When everyone was all tired out they definitely didn’t go home empty handed. Each lucky guest got to adopt a polar bear and take a snow making kit so that they could have their very own snow day whenever they felt like it!

{Make} – Edible Snow Globes

These adorable little snow globes from Bird’s Party are just too cute for words and edible! They make the perfect take home gift and they can double as name tags.

To make the snow globes, simply stack 2 marshmallows onto a round sugar cookie using royal icing to secure the pieces in place. Then decorate the snowman with edible ink pen and candy hat and nose (the tip of a candy corn or cut a piece from an orange gummy fish). Place the snowman inside an acrylic bauble (from most craft stores) and fill the bauble with desiccated coconut. Close the bauble and decorate with ribbon and a name tag.

Spread seasonal cheer with these delightful snowman cupcakes that were first featured on Martha Stewart. Since then creative variations have been popping up all over, which is part of the beauty of this design that I admire. The simplicity of the marshmallow snowman lends itself to anyone adding their own touch to make it their personal creation and you don’t have to be a whiz at fondant or piping frosting in order to end up with a finished product you’re proud of.

The basics: Start with pre-made cupcakes in your flavor of choice that have been frosted with vanilla frosting.

The snowman: Create by stacking large marshmallows “glued” with frosting to make the snowman the size you desire

Dress ‘em up!: Now is the best part…decorating the snowman. Get creative and let your imagination run wild. Use candy, pretzels, fruit rollups, stick gum, coconut, gel icing and whatever else you can think of to fashion an edible outfit for your snowman. Feel free to grab lots of inspiration from the photos above.

{Happy Hour} – Hot Mulled Cider

Whether you are spending a chilly hour walking through the tree lot picking the perfect tree or stringing lights over the exterior of your house, warming up with a steamy mug of spicy mulled cider is sure to chase the chill away from head to toe.

4 cups apple cider

2 tablespoons brown sugar

4 whole cloves

2 cinnamon sticks

5 (1/8 inch thick) slices peeled ginger

4 ounces apple jack

In a medium sauce pan, bring apple cider, brown sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks and ginger to a boil over medium high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 10 minutes. Remove pot from heat, cover and let stand for 10 minutes to allow flavors to steep. Add applejack and pour through a strainer into serving glasses. Garnish with cinnamon sticks.

For an alcoholic option you can add 1/2 an ounce of rum or whiskey to a each glass prior to adding cider.

Reminiscent of snowflakes, paper doilies can easily be combined with strings of lights to create a festive holiday garland. Who knew doilies could be so pretty and elegant? These little paper gems come in all shapes and sizes, are easy to find and the best part is they are inexpensive. Simply punch or cut holes in doilies of various sizes and then string the light strand through or squeeze the actual light bulb through the opening. Instant decor for holidays, bridal showers or even a great DIY wedding project!

{Happy Hour} – Goblet Of Fire

Any Harry Potter fan knows what the Goblet of Fire is, but I was so excited when found this adult version on Tumblr! Even if your friends aren’t fans of Harry this drink is sure to impress.

1 oz vodka

1 oz Blue Curacao

3 ozs lemonade

A splash of 151 proof rum

A pinch of cinnamon

Pour vodka, Blue Curacao and lemonade a shaker with ice and shake well to mix. Strain into a goblet type glass. Top with a splash of 151 proof rum. Light on fire. Add a pinch of cinnamon to the flames for added spark. Extinguish flames before consuming. (If that doesn’t go without saying.)

Tired of all the traditional baby shower games that are honestly a bit a chore rather than entertaining? Well then here is a unique game for you. Little plastic babies are frozen in ice cube trays and your guests race to see who can “break their water” the fastest. You wouldn’t believe the lengths some guests will go to trying to thaw these little babies!

Simply freeze little plastic babies in ice cubes trays. You can find the little dolls in packages at most dollar stores or party supply shops. If you can’t find them, gummie bears work just as well. Place an ice cube baby in a small plastic cup or dixie cup and give one to each guest. The only rules, you can’t touch the ice cube with your hands or pour hot liquid on it. First guest to free their baby and yell “My water broke!” wins.
